Our Department Today
Our
district now covers approximately 72 square miles which includes
manufacturing facilities, urban and rural residential, businesses, a
major highway that links two interstates and a railway that runs east
and west the entire length of our district. We currently have an ISO
rating of 6 within the town limits and the Highway 70 corridor, outside
of these areas our ISO rating is a 9. The department now has two stations providing fire
suppression and advanced medical response in our district. We also
provide and receive automatic mutual aid with six neighboring
departments and the City of Salisbury Fire Department. This entire
response area covers approximately 150-200 square miles.
Until
2003 we were strictly a volunteer department but due to the large number
of delayed response times on calls during the day the Board of
Directors’ felt it was necessary to add part time paid personnel. We now
have one station staffed with three part time firefighters from 9:00
A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday thru Friday. We have 31 active volunteer
firefighters working out of two stations that not only respond with the 15 part time personnel they
also answer all calls after peak hours and on the weekends.
The past couple of years we have added several new pieces of apparatus
to our fleet. The apparatus that has been added to the fleet is a 1983
Mack with a 1500 GPM pump that is a reserve engine, a 2003 Chevrolet
Suburban functioning as a Medical Responder unit, a 2003 Ford Crown
Victoria that is the Chief's car, and two 2007 Kenworth 2000 gallon
tankers. We also converted a tanker that was replaced by one of the new
one's to a foam unit that carries Class B foam in bulk and an assortment
of foam delivery devices.
